We aim to compare the lengths traveled by an object on two different surfaces: one smoother and one rougher. We will find that the lengths traveled by the object are different because the frictional forces are different. The distance traveled on the smooth surface is greater because the frictional force is less. The length traveled on the rough surface is less because the frictional force is greater.
